My Mac Internet Runs Slow When Wirelessly Connected?

I have a Mac with Snow Leopard OSX and it the speed is fine when it's plugged in with the ethernet cable, but when I have it connected wirelessly, it's runs very slow. This usually wouldn't be a problem, but I am moving out of my house and into a bungalow out in the back yard and it needs to be wireless. Help?
