What the heck is "wat" all about? Is anyone else sick of all these shortened words?

Are people really so lazy that they can't spell the word correctly? One extra keystroke, that's all it takes. Just a small fraction of a second to demonstrate you have an understanding of the English language. "IDK" is another one. it takes me about 2 seconds to type "I don't know" and I am a poor typist. Is two seconds too much to spend these days? Are people in that much of a rush these days? It's a sad state of affairs if they are.
