When open games on my PC the screen goes haywire.?

I just bought a new comp from my brother, he custom built it. The systems pretty new but my moniter is an old CRT wondering if this has something to do with it. Doom3 will work, but UT2007 and Battlefeild 2142 just come up as screwy screens. Please excuse me if I'm vague, I'm uber tired.
